For more information about the Cal Nat class see: <a href=\"http:\/\/calnat.ucanr.edu\/\" target=\"_page1\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/calnat.ucanr.edu\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pepperwoodpreserve.org\/\" target=\"_page1\">Pepperwood Preserve<\/a> designed the protocol for this study. To see the locations of the monitoring sites look at the tracks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mikefitz.us\/capstone\/index.php\/pepperwood-protocol\/track-2018-0503\/\">GPS Maps<\/a> above.<\/p>\n<p>Vegetation monitoring is done to evaluate how well <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=480\" target=\"_page1\">Trione-Annadel State Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sugarloafpark.org\/\" target=\"_page1\">Sugarloaf Ridge State Park<\/a> will recover from the devastating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/communications\/downloads\/Watershed_reports\/20171115_NunsWERT.pdf\" target=\"_page1\">Nuns Canyon fire<\/a> that occurred on October 8, 2017. Wendy Hayes, a classmate, and I assisted William Miller, California State Parks Environmental Scientist, by hiking into the remote areas of the parks and establishing monitoring sites. Simply put, a monitoring site is a location where measurements of the current state of fire damage are made for comparison at a later date to judge how the forest in that area is recovering.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/mikefitz.us\/capstone\/index.php\/pepperwood-protocol\/\" target=\"_page1\">Pepperwood Protocol<\/a>:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid gray; padding: 1px; size: 3;\"><strong>Sampling Point Setup<\/strong><br \/>\nSampling design is based on the plotless point-centered quarter method (Cottam and Curtis 1956). We will establish rebar with a protective tennis ball at the centerpoint and the sampled area will be based on the distances to the nearest canopy and pole trees in each quadrant. This tree was already dead before the fire. In 1993 a state crew <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Girdling\" target=\"_page1\">girdled<\/a> many large fir trees about 12&#8243; from the ground to kill them because they were crowding out the oaks.
